It's been said that pigs are considered the fifth most intelligent animals on earth, ranking even higher in IQ than dogs. These highly sensitive and aware animals love spending time socializing and frolicking outdoors. But many modern farms have pigs confined to tiny cages indoors, giving them few socializing opportunities. Deprived of the ability to engage in normal behaviours, these pigs become stressed out and unhealthy.
That just sounds wrong to us. So the pigs we sell, which come from Harley Farms near Peterborough, are kept together in family groups for most of their lives. They also have as much fresh and abundant space to roam as possible. Even on cold and snowy days, pigs seem to be happiest outside, as long as they have the option to retreat to a dry and warm shelter.
Our pigs also subsist predominantly on the plants and crops they are meant to consume, thereby reducing the dependency on grains like soy, barley, corn and wheat. The pigs are raised to be well-suited for a life of foraging for food in nature. All these measures reduce the pigs' stress levels, support their overall health, and lead to higher-quality meat!
No growth hormones
The use of growth hormones on pigs is controversial. By using synthetic chemicals to mimic the effects of natural hormones, farmers can increase the rate of growth and weight gain in pigs. This, in turn, leads to more profit per pig.
But there are also health risks associated with the use of growth hormones. Some studies have suggested that these chemicals may increase the risk of cancer in humans who eat those pigs.
Furthermore, as we have previously mentioned, the overuse of antibiotics is leading to a global crisis of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic use in animals can raise the risk of them transmitting drug-resistant bacteria to humans, which makes it harder to treat bacterial infections and illnesses.
